The Difference between Inspiration and the Whispering of the Devil By: Abi’Nasar Muhammad Ibn Abdillah Al-Imaam ____________________________________ Differentiating between the praiseworthy thoughts and the devilish insinuation is an important issue that must be understood[1]. Allâh the Most High said regarding the human soul: “By Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul), and Him Who perfected him in proportion; Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him.”[2] Ibn Atiyyah said in his interpretation of this verse “Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him”. (15\471) He said it means: “He taught it the ways of good and the ways of evil and grant it the access to attaining evil and the access to attaining piety” I said: Its inspiration of piety is from the praise worthy inspiration, but its inspiration of evil is from the dispraised inspiration. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said in “Majmoo Fatawa” (17\529) “The criteria of knowing the difference between the praise worthy inspiration and the dispraised one is the Book and Sunnah; therefore if what pops up in your soul is among the things which the Book and Sunnah indicate that it is piety, then it is from the praiseworthy inspiration and if they indicate that it is evil, then it’s from the dispraised inspiration and this criteria is persistent and unchangeable.
