Reading the Qur’aan

Reading the Qur’aan
Translated & Compiled by
Abbas Abu Yahya
Advice for the one who has no blessings in his time
One of the Salaf said:
‘Every time I increased in reading a portion of the Qur’aan, blessings increased in my time, and I continued increasing in reading until I reached reading ten Ajzaa (parts) of my portion of reading.’
Ibraheem bin AbdulWahid al-Maqdasi advised ad-Deeya al-Maqdasi when he wanted to travel for knowledge:
‘Read the Qur’aan a lot and do not leave it; indeed it will make it easy for you for that what you seek (i.e. knowledge) due to the amount that you read.’
ad-Deeya said: ‘I saw that this was true and I experienced it a lot, so I used to if I had read a lot find it easy to hear Hadeeth being narrated a lot and writing them down,  and if I did not read the Qur’aan,  it would not be easy for me.’
[From: ‘Thayl Tabaqaat al-Hanabila by Ibn Rajab 3/205]
Reflecting upon the Qur’aan
Shamsuddeen Muhammad bin Abee Bakr Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah (d.751 A.H.) -Rahimullaah-said:
‘If the people knew what was in reciting the Qur’aan with reflecting upon it they would definitely busy themselves with it, rather than busying themselves with everything other than the Qur’aan.
Reading the Ayaat while pondering over them is better than finishing reading it without reflecting upon it and understanding it. This is more beneficial for the heart, and greater in extent to achieving Eemaan and to taste the sweetness of the Qur’aan. . . . ‘
[Miftah Dar-As-Sa'ada 1/553]
The Necessity of Learning the Qur’aan
Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih al-Uthaymeen (d.1421 A.H.) said:
‘It is necessary for a person to learn the meanings of the Qur’aan just like he learns the wording of the Qur’aan. It is very regretful that the reality of many of the Muslims is that they are not upon this methodology.  Meaning that they read the Qur’aan for worship with just its wordings without understanding its meaning or without implementing its rulings.
This is a great deficiency, and its effects are apparent upon the Muslims, whereby they have significantly opposed what the Salaf as-Salih (righteous predecessors) were upon from implementing the Qur’aan, in wording, meaning and action. Therefore, the Muslims have missed out on a lot of goodness.’

Wipe the dust off your Mushaf & let's start reciting!

Wipe the dust off your Mushaf & let's start reciting!

Reading the Qur'aan during Ramadaan - (Extracts of the article)
'Abdullaah bin Saalih Al-Fawzaan

Let's turn our attention to the Qur’aan this blessed month.

شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِيَ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ
“The month of Ramadhan is that in which the Qur’aan was revealed…”

Abu Umaamah (radiAllaahu 'anhu) reported that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)said:

"Recite the Qur'aan for indeed it will come on the Day of Judgement as an intercessor for its Ashaab (those who read, memorize & implement it)." (1)
This hadeeth indicates the virtues of reciting the Qur'aan, the greatness of its reward and that it will intercede for its holders on the Day of Judgement towards their entrance into Paradise.

An-Nawaas Ibn Sama'aan (radiAllaahu 'anhu) reported: "I heard the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) say: 'The Qur'aan will be brought on the Day of Judgement as well as the people who used to act upon it. Surat-ul-Baqarah and Aali 'Imraan will then approach them.' The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم)likened them to three examples, which I have not forgotten afterwards. He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

'As if they were two clouds or two dark black canopies with light between them both or like two flocks of birds stretching their wings in the air pleading for the one who recited them.'" [2]

'Abdullaah Ibn 'Amr (radiAllaahu 'anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

"The fast and the Qur'aan will intercede for the servant on the Day of Judgement. The fast will say: 'My Lord, I restricted him from food and drink, so allow me to intercede for him.' And the Qur'aan will say:

'I prevented him from sleeping at night, so allow me to intercede for him.' So they will be allowed to intercede." [3]

Therefore, it is essential for the person fasting to recite the Qur'aan much during these blessed days and honorable nights. For indeed, there is a special virtue for the abundance of recitation in these days, which is NOT found in any other month. He should take advantage of the nobleness of time during this month, in which Allaah revealed the Qur'aan.

There is a special merit to reciting the Qur'aan in the nights of Ramadaan. For indeed, the night brings an end to the busy daily affairs, the enthusiasm is roused and the heart and the tongue mount upon reflecting. And Allaah is the one in whom we seek assistance.

It is reported that Jibreel used to meet with the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) during each night of Ramadaan and they would study the Qur'aan together. [4] So if making Dhikr (remembrance of Allaah) were better than the Qur'aan or equal to it (on these nights), they would have done that all the time or at certain times along with constantly gathering for that occasion.

Thus, this hadeeth illustrates the precedence of studying the Qur'aan during Ramadaan and gathering together for that occasion as well as turning towards one who is more prominent in the memorization of it.

The predecessors of this ummah would recite the Qur'aan constantly during Ramadaan. And when they would fast, they would sit in the masaajid and say: "We will guard our fast and not backbite anyone."

The person reciting the Qur'aan must observe the proper etiquettes of recitation. Some of them are that: He makes his intention sincerely for Allaah, that he recite it whilst being in a state of purity, that he use the Siwaak and that he recite it while pondering on its meaning and observing total consciousness. Allaah says:

"A Book, which We have revealed to you in order that its verses may be pondered upon, so that the people of understanding may be reminded."

Also, from the etiquettes of the recitation is that one does not stop his reciting in order to speak to someone else. Indeed, when many people sit to recite the Qur'aan, and there are people sitting next to them, a majority of the time, they stop their recitation and speak to their neighbors. This is not proper since it is turning away from the recitation without a valid reason.

And it is on the one who recites, to act upon the Qur'aan, making permissible its Halaal and forbidding its Haraam, so that the Qur'aan can be a proof for him on the Day of Judgement and intercede for him in entering the gardens of bliss.

Assalam alykum WarehmatuAllahi Wabarakatuh
Respected sister!
AlhamduliAllah I saw such a tremendous feeling in u people for memorization of Qu'ran.
I just wnated to share some of the virtues of memorization with u.

"Abu Huraira (r.z) narrated that Rasulullah Sallallahu Aleyi wasalam said: There is no jealousy but of two men: A man whom Allah has taught the Quran and he recites is during the hours of the night and during the hours of the day, and his neighbor listens to him and says: "I wish I had been given what has been given to so-and-so, in order that I might do what he does; and a man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it on what is just and right, whereupon another man may say: "I wish I had been given what so-and-so has been given, for then I would do what he does" (Sahih Bukhari).

It is narrated from Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Amr (r.z) that Rasulullah Sallallahu Aleyi wasalam said: Allah U will say to a Hafiz (upon his death and on the day of Qiyaamat) 'Recite the Quran and (upon reciting each Verse) climb (a stage in Jannah) and continue reciting as you used to in the world as your abode in Jannah is upon the last verse you recite.' (Mishkaat)
Ma Allah Subhanahutala make us of those Aameen.

so AlhamduliAllah I decided to start the Hifdh group class for u.
Only those people are eligible for this class who do not need lot of Tajweed practice and atleast they can recite the Qura'n without making major mistakes.

The timings suits me most is on Monday 11-12p.m EST.

JazakiAllahu Kahir

Memorizing the Book of Allah: Interview with Ustadhah Kareema Czerepinski

Bismillah

As a belated part-two to our Seeking Knowledge series, sister Mariam E. and I conducted an interview with Ustadhah Kareema Czerepinski on memorizing the Book of Allāh as a follow-up to our advice on the proper methods of pursuing sacred knowledge. It is the perfect time for students to start or renew their memorization now that the summer break is upon us and Ramadan is right around the corner inshā’Allāh. We hope that these answers are beneficial to you and us. May Allāh make us from the Companions of His Book and unite us with His righteous slaves in the highest gardens of Paradise. Āmīn.
Ustadhah Kareema Czerepinski, author of the three part book series: Tajweed Rules of the Qur’an, memorized the Qurʾān and went on to receive an ijaazah in the way of Hafs ‘an ‘Asim, by the way of Shatibiyyah, and another ijaazah by the way of Tayyibat Al-Nashr. She then continued and received an ijaazah in the ten qira’aat min tareeq Ash-Shaaitibiyyah and Ad-Durrah. She is in charge of the non-Arab division at Dar Al-Huda Qur’an school for ladies.
What is your advice for the one who has embarked on the journey to memorize the Qurʾān?
“Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing, the Wise.”
Assalaam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.  First of all, I thank you for the good supposition you have about me, pray that this is for the benefit of the Muslims, and ask Allāh to guide me in my answers to that which is best and helpful to the Muslims who wish to learn and memorize the Words of Allāh.
This question alone is one that books could be written on. I will try not to, but it is hard. The main three points of advice surround intention, schedule, and being tested.

Intention
Of course the first step is to make one’s intention solely for the pleasure of Allāh and not for any earthly gain.  I say “of course” thinking that it is hardly possible for one to embark on this journey without pure intentions, as it is one that requires great amounts of time, patience, and perseverance, continual supplication to Allāh for success, and deep from the gut determination. Then again, lately there has been a rise in Muslims forging documents, claiming to have a certificate they don\’t, or a chain of transmission that they don\’t, all to charge others great amounts of money for the chance to recite to them.  The stories get more and more amazing as the years go by and some Muslims lose track of the fact that Allāh is always monitoring, watching our every move and knows what is in our hearts.  For that reason, I feel like it is still the number one thing to say, even though it is obvious.  The Muslim brothers or sisters who have embarked on or are going to embark on this journey need to be honest with themselves and clear up any kind of wiswas (whispers) that may occur in their intentions.
The student may want to research the sound ahaadeeth on the benefits of memorizing the Qur\’an and the honor those who have memorized receive on the Day of Resurrection. One may put posters up in different  part of the house with some of the ahaadeeth, then change them every week or so, to help refresh the intentions and feel motivated.

Schedule
The next is to set up a reasonable schedule, one including daily memorization and review.  It is of the upmost importance that this schedule is neither too ambitious, so the student of memorization doesn\’t get frustrated and give up, nor too easy so the student feels unchallenged and loses interest.  It is always best that the memorization and review are sequential and not random. This helps give the memorizer a clear picture of where he/she is and where he/she is going.
The best way for most is to be in an organized group with a set curriculum, time and days of class.  This helps keep motivation up, as no one likes to be behind the class, and also formulates bonds of brotherhood/sisterhood between the students for mutual cooperation and assistance.  There are some who do better on an individualized program, but with a group where each person recites what he/she has memorized to the teacher or individually has a set date for reciting his/her memorization to a teacher.  Still others have the patience, perseverance, and self motivation and control to do the memorization by their selves. On the whole, this form takes the most struggle as it is easy to get distracted and fall out of the daily routine when there is no appointed time to recite to a teacher and no group for extra motivation.
It is important to set apart a specific time of day to memorize and review, the time of day when there is the least amount of noise, and least amount of chance of being bothered or distracted. This time is set by the individual circumstances, but if possible right after fajr is what I would recommend.
Review/Testing
Don\’t be in a hurry to finish memorizing and whiz through it without the memorization being firm.  The student should be able to close the mushaf (copy of the Qurʾān) and recite what he/she memorized completely without a mistake, then that same section should be repeated during the day.  It is very important, no, imperative, that someone who is proficient in the Qur\’an listens to what has been memorized and checks it.  It is also crucial to be tested on a whole juz\’ when finished, and then on groups of ajzaa, such as 3, 5, or 10 at a time as the memorizer progresses through the stages of putting the Qur\’an in their memory.
The review part of the daily section is just as important as the new memorization. One cannot call himself or herself a haafidh when in fact he/she memorized piece by piece and never put it together or reviewed intensely.
How does one face a period of laziness that might attack in the middle of this journey?
The student of the Qur\’an needs to realize before they start that shaytaan is going to come to them and try to dissuade them from their noble goal.  The wiswas can be in the form of making one feel like it is never going to end, or seeing others having “fun” while the student is struggling forth, or any other sort of tool.  Knowing this should keep the student on guard and help recognize the cause of the laziness or feeling of wanting to stop.
The worst thing to do at this time is take a break from memorizing.  This will make returning to the memorization more difficult and usually one will feel like the task has become harder.  The best thing to do is make du‘ā’\’, renew one’s intentions, change the hadeeth on the wall to a new one and read all the previously hung hadeeth. Reading other\’s stories of struggle can also help.
What is the best way to schedule memorization around work, school, and/or other responsibilities? Or is it recommended to take time off and devote oneself completely for it,  for better results?
As previously mentioned, the student of memorization needs to find a quiet, consistent time where he/she can memorize and review.  Memorization should have first priority in the day, and insha\’Allāh there will be barakah in the remaining activities.
It is hard to say whether it is better to take time off from studies and work to memorize or not.  Oftentimes with a tight schedule and well planned time control one can do more than freeing oneself completely to devote all one’s time to memorization.  For many, taking time off is not an option.  Others do better in a classroom situation with a set curriculum and complete devotion to memorization.
Any tips on the best way to memorize the Mutashabihaat verses? (i.e. those verses that are repeated, similar, etc.)
Memorizing them isn\’t nearly as difficult as keeping them straight when reviewing.  Since memorizing is a slow build up, the first few mutashaabihaat are not too difficult to keep straight.  It is later when firming up memorization and reviewing that it can become difficult.  One tool is writing down the different  stories of the same content or groups of aayaat and comparing them.  As the same story comes up in different surahs, the memorizer can add the new aayaat to his/her comparative list and study them and review them all at the same time, finding the similarities and differences.  The stories of the Prophets is one area in which this is especially needed.
There are numerous books in Arabic which help with the mutashaabihaat and there are poems.  One specific poem which helped me personally was As-Sakhkhaawiyyah.  I didn\’t memorize the whole poem, but learned some parts and read through it and that helped keep many things straight.  For example the lines outlining the places in the Qur\’an which have  abadan after khaalideen feeha really helped.
Some Muslims just can keep them straight by themselves, though, masha\’ Allāh and don\’t need mnemonic devices to keep them straight.
Many Muslims feel that learning tajweed is not necessary; can you shed some light on why it is a critical part of learning the Qur’an?
The Qur\’an was revealed in the Arabic language and was recited by the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allāh upon him, and the Sahabah with tajweed.  Why would one want to recite it another way?  The Arabs at the time of revelation spoke with idhgaam, ikhfa\’, etc, all the rules we now study to be able to read the Qur\’an with tajweed.  There are parts of tajweed which were not in the normal Arab speech such as the lengthening of the sounds in the mudood, and this was then passed down in authentic chains of transmission to us and documented in the old books on tajweed.
There are parts of tajweed which are vital to know, since without applying them the actual letters can change in sound and a major mistake is made.  This is the basic tajweed knowledge that all Muslims should apply in their reading, whether they are memorizing the whole Qur\’an, or just memorizing a few for their prayers.

What level of tajweed does one need to possess before embarking on the journey to memorize Qurʾān?
This would depend on one’s ultimate goal. If one is memorizing with the intention of never teaching anyone else and just to get the honor and reward, then it would be enough to know the basic rules such as the laam saakinah, mudood, noon saakinah, makhraj, and meem saakinah.  I would caution however, that many times Muslims memorize, then later decide they want to teach or find themselves in a situation in which they are the only ones around who knows any amount of Qur\’an, or change their mind and want an ijaazah, and then have to go back and learn everything in detail.  This can be quite difficult.
For most Muslims I would say that they should learn the above, plus all the rest of detailed tajweed because those who have memorized are usually called upon to teach and have a duty to help other Muslims.  One cannot teach properly without having a strong basis of knowledge themselves.  One can start memorizing at a slow level while learning the tajweed rules and being corrected on its application in recitation, and later after learning the required tajweed step up the memorization quantity.
Is it possible for one to perfect their tajweed and pronunciation without a teacher, perhaps through listening to recorded recitations only?
It is possible, but not very likely. The way the Qur\’an has been taught from the early days of this nation and will continue to be taught is by oral transmission, being taught and listened to and corrected by a trained, mastered Qur\’an teacher.  There are a few who are very good at imitating sounds and have the ear to pick up the small minute changes in sound heard from recordings and produce them with their own mouth, but this is not the average person, not even some, instead it is a rare case.  Again, it can happen, but the general rule for the vast majority is that it is extremely important that one is corrected by a trained teacher.
Is it required to memorize the last harakah of each āyah if one does not have a solid background in Arabic grammar?
One doesn\’t need to have a solid background in Arabic grammar to memorize the last harakah of the aayah.  One needs to have a solid Arabic grammar background to explain the reason for the harakah.  When we memorize the Qur\’an we should pay attention to the last harakah and try to memorize it with the rest of the aayah.  Many Shuyūkh giving ijazaah request the student of the ijaazah to join aayaat together particularly in the shorter surahs to make sure the student knows the vowel on the last letter of an aayah. Knowing the vowel on the last letter of the aayah becomes particularly important in learning and applying the different qira\’aat.
Many people associate memorization with being young. Is it possible for someone to begin memorizing after the ‘golden years\’ of memorization? And what is your advice for such a person?
Youth on the whole can memorize easier, but age should not stop anyone from memorizing.  Sometimes Muslims have a mental picture of those over 40 or 50 not being able to memorize, but there are many stories of Muslims memorizing the Qur\’an later in life, some even starting in their 60\’s and succeeding in completion.
With purity of intention, lots of du‘ā’\’ asking Allāh to make it simple, and determination, nothing is impossible with Allāh\’s help.
I know of a sister in her 30s with 5 children who memorized the whole Qur\’an in 3 years and went on to get an ijaazah.  She had to sacrifice sleep and many other things we generally hold important, but she did it for Allāh, and by His will, she accomplished her goal. My advice is to never give up.
What advice do you have for new Muslims and older Muslims who face difficulty with memorizing and pronunciation?
The same advice as above, do not give up.  Turn to Allāh, don\’t be afraid of the struggle and devote yourself to the Qur\’an.  You do have to sacrifice, but the reward of Allāh is great for all your efforts.  Some give up too easily, but be stubborn in your pursuit of reading the words of Allāh correctly and keep trying.  Don\’t make excuses for yourself and don\’t let your ego get in your way.  The students who do the best on the whole are those who are eager to be corrected, do not complain, and are not afraid to make a mistake.
What are some habits that a student of the Qur’an should implement?
You probably mean study habits, but more important is improving themselves as Muslims and making that a habit.  Pray tahajjud, fast extra fasts, make sure you implement the aayaat of Qur\’an in your life and are a shining example of those of the Qur\’an.
Stay away from sin, repent for all your sins and stop anything that is not suitable for “ahl al-Qur\’an.” (the people of the Qur’an)
Do not waste time, it is a precious commodity for the student of the Qur\’an, so use it wisely and use it for the sake of Allāh. This is something I can\’t say enough.  Many Muslims have lofty goals, but lose their precious time searching the Internet for different recordings of recitation from multiple Shuyūkh, looking up details of the qira\’aat and other advanced details of tajweed when they themselves are relatively beginners or have not progressed far in their memorization.   Focus on the task at hand, and listen to one of the masters of tajweed such as Sheikh Al-Husary or Sheikh Abdullah Basfar.
What should be the goal(s) of a student who has completed their memorization and what should they do after this?
This is really up to the student for most aspects, but the goal that should be shared by all after memorizing the Qur\’an is to firm up the memorization and have a very strong review program to keep themself a hafidh. Once the memorization is complete it is not the end, it is just the beginning.
If the student of the Qur\’an would like to achieve an ijaazah of the Qur\’an after memorizing and firming up the memorization, they should approach a sheikh or sheikhah with an ijaazah and be evaluated by them.  If the student has not memorized the Jazariyyah poem, and wished to get an ijaazah in the Qur\’an, he/she should memorize the Jazariyyah and study its meaning.   After the evaluation, the sheikh or sheikhah might give them points to work on, or start an ijaazah with them.
After an ijaazah in one riwaayah or qiraa\’ah, the student can then pursue knowledge of the 10 qiraa\’aat.  There is much to learn and each step is more beautiful than the previous one.
In your opinion, what is the best method of reviewing the Book of Allāh, so as not to lose it by Allāh\’s will?
The scholars say, “[Review] five, you won\’t forget” (خمس لا تنسى), meaning if you review five ajzaa\’ per day, you will not forget.  This is a very true statement.  If one cannot keep up reviewing 5 per day all the time, they should try to do this strong program of review for at least six months after completing memorization.  After that the student who cannot keep up with five ajzaa\’ per day can decrease the amount to 2 or 3 a day, or the very minum, one juz\’ per day; any less than this will not keep the memorization strong.
How much repetition is required for one to completely solidify the hifdh? What has worked for you/your students?
It is hard to quantify and varies from individual to individual.  Suffice it to be said that it requires a lot of repetition, and for six months the review should be quite intense with five ‘ajzaa per day reviewed, if at all possible.
The school I studied at has special classes for tathbeet (firming up memorization).  As a class we went through the Qur\’an six times, the number of students in the class, and each day recited three ajzaa\’ to the teacher as a class, but we didn\’t know which section we were going to be asked to recite as individuals.  We were required to recite at a quick pace, trying to keep our tajweed up as much as possible, so the memorization needed to be quite firm. The teacher would keep track of which sections we had recited to her and at the end of the year, each of us had recited the whole Qur\’an to her, but in pieces.  This was and is a very good program and I thank Allāh for giving me the opportunity to be in this class.
Please recommend a Tafseer suitable for beginners. Which tafseer did you benefit from the most?
The translations into English of the meaning of the Qur\’an give only a general idea of the aayaat, and it is quite important that a deeper understanding of the Qur\’an and the background for a surah or aayah be known, as well as any explanation given by the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allāh upon him, and the Sahaabah.  Ibn Kathir is a great tafseer and al-hamdu lillah it has been translated into English.  May Allāh reward those who did this with a great reward and make it of the deeds which continue accumulating for them after their deaths.
How important do you think it is to study tafseer along with memorization? Does it aid in memorizing?
It is extremely important and yes it aids greatly in memorization, especially if word by word meaning is given to the students as they memorize.  There needs to be study of vocabulary words along with the memorization and tests given on the vocabulary words.
How can we instill love for the Qur’an in our children and youth?
By showing them how much we love it and by employing the Qu\’ran in our life in every aspect. Teaching them that Qur\’an is first is something they will carry with them to adulthood.  I heard a lecture once recommending that parents always start their children with Qur\’an homework, then any other deen related subjects, then the other science, math and literature subjects.  This will show the children the importance of Qur\’an.
There is no doubt that one who carries the Book of Allāh must also carry beautiful conduct and character. Can you please shed light on some of the most important characteristics of Ahl-al-Qurʾān?
There are so many, as “ahl Al-Qur\’an” should be examples of the best in character and conduct.  We should aim to have our manners as [what is in] the Qur\’an as Aisha may Allāh be pleased with her, described the Prophet peace and blessings of Allāh upon him.  Even though we are far from his example, we should try our utmost.
I think the one encompassing characteristic is that of Taqwaa.  If one has taqwaa, everything else will be correct, insha\’ Allāh.
The following are what came to my mind, and are under the category of taqwaa:
First and foremost, those who are “carriers” of the Qur\’an should have truthfulness and honesty.  It cannot be that ahl al-Qur\’an tell lies or are dishonest.
Another very important characteristic is standing up for the truth and not wronging anyone or allowing someone to be wronged.
The inside of Ahl Al-Qur\’an should be like their outward appearance, meaning there should be no hypocrisy.
Patience is also a very important characteristic which those who are carriers of the Qur\’an should have.
May Allāh grant us the best of manners and characteristics, may He purify our intentions in all that we do, may Allāh make us of “ahl al-Qur\’an,” and give us the honors promised those who have memorized the Qur\’an on the Day of Resurrection. I seek Allāh’s forgiveness and repent to Him alone.

Imam al-Jazari’s praise for the Qur’an bearer Taken from the Muqaddimah of ‘Tayyibat al-Nashr.’ وبعد: فالإنسان ليس يشرف *** إلا بما يحفظه ويعرف A person is not honoured or raised Except by what he knows and has memorised لذاك كان حاملو القرآن *** أشراف الأمة أولى الإحسان For that reason the bearers of Qur’an Are the nobles of this Ummah and its righteous وإنهم في الناس أهل الله *** وإن ربنا بهم يباهي And they are the people of Allah amongst Mankind * And indeed our Lord has boasted of them وقال في القرآن عنهم وكفى *** بأنه أورثه من اصطفى He spoke of them in the Qur’an, and it is sufficient That He gives it (the Qur’an) to those He has chosen ** وهو في الأخرى شافع مشفع *** فيه وفوله عليه يسمع And in the Hereafter, it is an ardent intercessor And its statement is something surely heard يعطى به الملك مع الخلد إذا *** توجه تاج الكرامة كذا By it a person is given the dominion and immortality And likewise, he is given the crown of honour يقرا ويرقى درج الجنان *** وأبواه منه يكسيان He’ll read and ascend the ranks of Paradise by it And his parents will also be clothed by it *** فليحرص السعيد في تحصيله *** ولا يمل قط من ترتيله So let a person strive to attain it And let him never tire of its recitation. ____ * Due to the hadith: ‘Indeed Allah has people from amongst Mankind. The people of Qur’an, they are the people of Allah and His Specialties.’ [Ahmad, Ibn Majah] ** Due to the verse in Soorah Fatir: ثُمَّ أَوْرَثْنَا الْكِتَابَ الَّذِينَ اصْطَفَيْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا فَمِنْهُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهِ وَمِنْهُم مُّقْتَصِدٌ وَمِنْهُمْ سَابِقٌ بِالْخَيْرَاتِ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَضْلُ الْكَبِيرُ “Then We gave the Book for inheritance to such of Our slaves whom We chose…” [Fatir: 32] *** Due to the hadith: ‘The Qur’aan will meet its companion on the Day of Resurrection when his grave is opened for him, in the form of a pale man. It will say to him, ‘Do you recognize me?’ He will say: ‘I do not recognize you.’ It will say: ‘I am your companion the Qur’aan, who kept you thirsty on hot days and kept you awake at night. Every merchant benefits from his business and today you will benefit from your good deeds.’ He will be given dominion in his right hand and eternity in his left, and there will be placed on his head a crown of dignity, and his parents will be clothed with priceless garments the like of which have never been seen in this world. They will say: ‘Why have we been clothed with this?’ It will be said: ‘Because your son used to recite Qur’aan.’ Then it will be said to him: ‘Recite and ascend in the degrees of Paradise,’ and he will continue to ascend so long as he recites, either at a fast pace or a slow pace.’ [Ahmad, Ibn Majah]

You Want Greatness, Honour, Glory? Then do this

Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Every description of glory and greatness and honour ascribed to the Quraan–every description–is also for the person who learns it.  So whoever wants greatness then it is upon him to learn what is in the Quraan.  And whoever wants honour in his speech, his wealth, his status, then it is upon him to learn what is in the Quraan. ”
Bukugh al-Maraam, vol. 5, p. 40.

Some Narrations Regarding Reading the Qur’aan & Reflecting upon it

Some Narrations Regarding Reading the Qur’aan
& Reflecting upon it
        Translated by
Abbas Abu Yahya

1 – From Anas bin Malik -Radi Allaahu anhu- who said:
‘The wife of Uthmaan bin ‘Affan -Radi Allaahu anhu- said when they killed him: ‘You have killed him, while he was spending the night awake with the Qur’aan.’
[al-Hileeyah]

2 – From Nafa’ that it was asked to him: what would Ibn Umar -Radi Allaahu anhu- do in his home?
He answered:
‘You would not be able to bear what he would do, he would make Wudu for every prayer, and he would read the Qur’aan during the times between the prayers.’
[Tabaqaat Ibn Sa’d]

3 – From Nafa’ who said: When Abdullaah ibn Umar -Radi Allaahu anhu- would recite this Ayaah:
<<۞أَلَمۡ يَأۡنِ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ أَن تَخۡشَعَ قُلُوبُهُمۡ لِذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِ >>
<< Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allaah >> he would begin to cry and would be overcome by crying.’
[al-Musanaf]
4 – Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood -Radi Allaahu anhu- said:
‘Indeed these hearts are vessels, so busy them with the Qur’aan, and do not busy them with other things.
[al-Musanaf]
5 – From Ibn ‘Abbas -Radi Allaahu anhu:
‘Allaah guaranteed for the one who follows the Qur’aan that he will not be misguided in the Dunyaa, nor will he be miserable in the Hereafter, then he would recite:
<<فَإِمَّا يَأۡتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّي هُدٗى فَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ هُدَايَ فَلَا يَضِلُّ وَلَا يَشۡقَىٰ>>
<< whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter]. >>
[al-Musanaf]
6 – From Nafa’ who said:
Ibn Umar -Radi Allaahu anhu- used to recite in his prayer and if he passed an Ayaah which mentioned Paradise he would stop and ask Allaah for Paradise and he would supplicate and cry. And if he passed by an Ayaah which mention the Hell-Fire he would stop, supplicate and seek Allaah’s forgiveness.’
[‘Zuhud’ by Ahmad]
7 – From Nafa’ who said:
‘Ibn Umar never ever read these two Ayaat from the last part of Soorah Baqarah except that he would cry:
<<وَإِن تُبۡدُواْ مَا فِيٓ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَوۡ تُخۡفُوهُ يُحَاسِبۡكُم بِهِ ٱللَّهُۖ>>
<> then he would say: ‘Indeed this is a severe level of accountability.’
[al-Hileeyah]
8 – From Ibn Mas’ood -Radi Allaahu anhu- who said:
‘Be continuous in looking into the Mus’haf (the Qur’aan).’
[Shua’b al-Eemaan]
9 – From Yunus bin Jubayr who said:
‘Jundub accompanied us until we reached the edge of the town and we said, advise us.’
He said:
‘I advise you to have fear of Allaah and I advise you with the Qur’aan, since it is light on a dark night, and the brightness of the day.’
[Shua’b al-Eemaan]

Is a woman allowed to read Qur’aan during her period?
The scholars have differed on this issue.
The majority say that she should not read Qur’aan. And this is the math-hab of Imaam Ahmad, whereas other scholars say she should indeed read Qur’aan since there is no authentic evidence showing it isn’t allowed. Also the recitation of the Qur’aan is in itself recommended.
However one should follow a middle path (due to her state of impurity) and recite the Qur’aan if there is a real need, like for an example if she is afraid she might forget it or she might be teaching it to others or just studying it, reading du’aas from it etc. If she does not need to read it then she should settle for general dhikr instead of the Qur’aan in order to be free from the dispute.
And this is the opinion that is closest to the truth, i.e. that she reads it only if there is a real need for it and not otherwise.

My dear sisters in faith who I love for the sake of Allah,

I ask Allah to elevate you all with the Quran in this world and the hereafter.

This is a brief reminder/advice regarding memorising the Noble words of
our Lord.

To make your dream come true in memorising the Quran take the necessary
causes by learning from  a qualified teacher or enrolling in a  reputable local
Quran school so you can be corrected on your recitation mistakes so you do
not memoirse the Quran with mistakes and  read the words of Allah wrong.

To the noble Quran students at the Institute the Quran needs your time and
devotion so create a timetable and organise your life and responsibilites and give
up un-necassary acts which you do and decrease your time in socializing and
actions which waist your time. Allocate  a time daily to memorizing and listening
to the Quran as well as a seperate daily to review past memorisation outside of
class time, for example: morning memorise and evening allocated to review
past memorisation., you can also review during your sunnah prayers recite the surahs your memorisd in your prayer, doing this consistanl; do not let a day go by without reviewing yourpast memorisation. I stress you should not only review in class, you have to allocate time outside of class for reviewing so the memorisation does not gather upon you and forget the past parts
you have memorised. You teachers guide you in class but this is a reminder.

During your journey in memorising the Quran hold tight onto the rope of
patience because knowledge does not come over a period of day or night or
weeks and stay positive and beware of the whispers of the Shaytaan because He
will always try to divert you from the words of your Lord as only goodness will
happen to you by learning the Quraan and the shaytaan  can not bare the Quran!
Reciting the Quran will divert the shaytaan and evil away from you.

Always renew your intention, why am I learning the Quran? why do I want to
memorise it? Remember you are doing this to elevate your status in Jannah and
to gather good deeds to put on your good scales on the day of Judjement and
that you want to learn to recite the Quran the way it was revealed following the way of the Messenger peace be upon him and that you want to serve Allah's
Religion by teaching it once you have learned.

Increase in supplication when you find it challenging, it will be at start! the shaytaan will be at an inner war with you but after being persistent and dua he will leave you and you will find it easy.

Easy!! you may ask? Yes, easy my noble sister in faith.

Remember Allah's promise that He made this Quran easy to remember, He said:

" And we have indeed made the Quran easy to understand and remember, then is there anyone who will remember (or receive admonition)? Surah Al-Qamar Verse 17

So whoever finds it hard, then they must search within themselves and look at
any sins they must be doing and try and stop doing them because sins weaken
memory and also prevent us from gaining the blessings of our Lord as the
scholars explained. Focus always on strengthening your sincerity.

Strive  more daily  the verses of Allah will not be poured into you, you have to
allocate time daily and be perissant in memorising and reviewing. the more you
review the pages the more strong your memorisation will be stronger by the
permission of Allah.

Read tafseer explanation of the Quran. Before memorising the page read the
explanation of the verses on that page and keep a note book specifically for that
and write in summary the meaning of the verses and beneficial points so you
memorise with understand. There is the explanation of Ib Katheer and available
in English. I recommend this greatly. This will enable you to memorise and at
the same time you will seek more knowledge and understand the words of your
Lord aswell as memorising.

Do all this whilst relying in Allah for aid and success and ease because Allah
does not break His promise He made this Quran easy to remember! we just
have to work on our sincerity!

Remember my dear sisters in faith nothing in life comes easy! Instead on focusing on negativeness be positive ad focus on the reward you are piling by reciting every letter! take day by day, do not keep flicking through the pages int he rest of the Quran you have left to memorise. You may think how can I do this! But you will reach that day and join the family of the Quran who have memorised the book of Allah. Just take day by day and focus on the very pages
you have to memorise and try to forget about tomorrow. What guarantees us we will see the sun rise tomorrow. Just focus on doing as much good as you can in your day and if you live to see tomorrow you will  do what Allah has decreed for you. This is from the reasons why people lead to stress in general
and depression! worry too much about the future in this world in regards to
wealth, health family! Insead of putting their energy in taking the necessary
cause to deal with their affairs and relying and putting their trust in Allah the
All-mighty who is aware of their situation and the disposer of the affairs who
never sleeps or eats or gets tired.

So take day by day in all that you do, this does not mean you do not plan for
your future. You do, but just not be attached to your plans and attach your
heart to Allah. This is how the Messenger peace be upon him lived his life, like
everyday was his last. If we knew that today was our last day we would fill our
time with what is pleaseing to our Lord and feared Him in everything we do;
towards our spouse, children, parents, friends, neighbours and our hearts
would be lest attached to this deceiving world and more attached to what Allah has installed for us! May Allah attach our hearts to Him!

If we only turned more to Allah & His messenger peace be upon him  for
guidance in all aspects of our life we would live happy and peaceful during our
journey in this short world.

Truly if we are not patient in getting closer to Allah and worshiping Him and
learning His religion  we will have to be patient  in being ignorant and sinning.
Like one of the Salaf said: "The soul is a dosobeyer and sinner if you do not
busy her with obedience(to Allah) it will busy you with sin!" Memorising and
teaching the Quran and seeking knowledge in general will protect you from
sinning as you will have no time remaining after devoting the time to the Quran.

Look at the people of sins and dunya  how they are patient upon committing sin, for en example sitting long ours watching films which do nor make them
rich or benefit them! and spending ours to listening to music! the speech of man
and instruments of shaytaan? without complaining or saying it is difficult to
memorise the singers words!

How is that we spend so much time on socialising and on unnecessary speech
daily with friends and family either directly or online  and reading the news or
articals and books without questioning the amount of time we spend on doing
this or getting inpatient from hours of in-beneficial speech.

But when it comes to the speech of our Lord we make hundred of excuses to
not listen or read it in our daily lives and memorise it and follow its teachings
and it is for our own benefit to strengthen our eeman and gather much rewards.

We can find time for the dunya and worldly knowledge but when it comes to the Quran committing 3-5 hours too much to commit to Quran, however when in academic school, college, university you have to spend 6-8hrs daily of onsite
commitment then commitment outside of school on homework, essays
preparation of exams and for the book of Allah we question the time that we
have to allocate to it and become busy and our schedule becomes full of
commitments and not willing to make sacrifices, but for the Dunya to get a
worldly certificate willing to sacrifice days and nights for years of your life to get a better position in this world. But how about your postiion in Jannah? Your
eternal home, have you not though of ways how you can elevate
your position there?

Memorisin the Quran will take you to a better position in Jannah. As you know
in the Hadeeth sahih the person who memorised the Quran in this world and
(acted upon it) will be asked to recite from ememory as he recites from memory
he keeps raising in Jannah!! to a better place and he/she stops at the place they
stopped in their memorisation. This is the great benefit and purpose of
memorising the Quran. Memorising the Quran is your elevator in Jannah! So
why not get on the elevator whilst the door is open for you?

This is indeed from the shaytaan to divert us from the words of Allah and also due to our lack of sincerity like Shaikh AlBaani said the reason why a few memorise the Quran is due to lack of sincerity in seeking knowledge.

This Quran is the last revelation we have and our path to Jannahl our salvation.
We should take all the necessary means to learn, understand and apply it in our daily lives and spread its teachings.

We should try more in following the footsteps of the Messenger peace be upon him who is wife Aaisha (may Allah be pleased with her ) said in sahih Hadeeth narrated in Bukhari "His character was the Quran"

May Allah make the Quran our Aqeedah & Character! may Allah strengthen our eeman for indeed we are weak without Him. May not make this temporary world a distraction from working towards the eternal life.

There is a Quran software to use for practicing on Quran outside of lesson time for reviewing and listening to better their recitation. I advice the Quran students to used both these tools during their Quranic studies:
http://quran.ksu.edu.sa
It has a memorisation assessment tool where you can select what section from the Noble Quran you want to memorise or review memorisation. You then click on 'question' and  it selects for you one  verse from the page and makes the rest of the page blank and then you have to complete from your memory, if you forget whilst memorising you place your mouse on the page and different verses will show on the page to help you remember, I advice that you record yourself on your computer or recorder or tape whilst doing this. When you finish reviewing the page it has an option 'answer' when clicking on it the whole page of the Quran will show so you can read if you memorised correctly. If you recorded yourself you can play back and check and I advice to keep a note book for your memorisation and the section you hear yourself finding difficulty in remembering write the verse down so you know where your weakness is in the page and can focus on reviewing it. The method on the software is the same method Quran teachers use to test Quran students on their memorisation its a method which aids the strengthening of the memorisation of the Quran by the permission of Allah.
There is also another  very beneficial software called Quran Tracker in the English Language from another site:
http://www.qurantracker.com/
Which aims by the permission of Allah to act as a mean to aid one's Quran studies by way of keeping track of one's memorisation and revision, the format of the software allows you plan your memorisation and revision, students at the Institue should only follow the amount of memorisation allocated by the Institute in your lesson by your Quran teachers. The software also gives you choice of different reciters to listen to. I  advise students to use this software for their Quran studies and direct you to only listen to Shaikh Husri or Shaikh Minshawi  (May Allah have mercy upon them both) as their recitation is very clear and are from the Quran Scholars whose recitation are the closest in accuracy to the recitation of the Prophet peace be upon him.

(Please note I do NOT give reference or recommend the Islamic knowledge which they may send on their site or  promote on external social links on their website, my recommendation is for the beneficial Quran tracker tool/software only)  May Allah reward them for this great service to the Muslims.

May Allah grant you all aid and success in memorising His words and grant us the understanding of the Quran. May Allah grant us sincerity in learning His Book and spreading it so His speech can be the highest of speech. May Allah make the Quran a cause of bringing us closer to our Lord and entering into Jannah.
May Allah make the Quran the Joy of our hearts and the healing of our pain and sorrow.

"O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (Qur'aan) enjoining all that is good and forbidding all that is evil and a healing for that which is in your breasts, a guidance and a mercy for the believers." (Soorah Yunus: 57)
I hope in Allah this little advice/direction has helped the students in their goal in
memorising the Noble Quran.

the mercy of her Lord:

Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (may Allaah have mercy upon him) said:
"The abandonment of the Qur'aan is of different categories.
One of them: Abandoning listening to it, believing in it and paying attention to it.
The Second: Abandoning acting in accordance to it, not stopping at its permissible and prohibited matters. This is the case even if the person reads it and believes in it.
The Third: Abandoning judging by it and returning back to it for judgement in the fundamentals of the religion as well as the branches. Believing that it doesn't benefit certainty, its evidences are verbal and that it doesn't bring about the attainment of knowledge.
The Fourth: Abandoning contemplating over it, understanding it and knowing what the one who spoke with it intending.
The Fifth: Abandoning seeking a cure and treating oneself with it for all of the sicknesses of the hearts and its ailments. Rather the person seeks a remedy for his sickness from other than it and abandons the treating of himself with it.
All of this enters under the statement of Allaah:
"And the Messenger said: Oh my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur'aan as something (they have) abandoned." (Soorah al-Furqaan: 30)

Students of Knowledge not Memorising the Quraan–Why?

by Ahmed Abu Turaab
Translated by Ahmed Abu Turaab
Questioner: One of the other things I noted about this good, alhamdulillaah, [Islamic] awakening, and this interest in knowledge is that [unfortunately] the proportion [of people] turning towards memorising the Book of Allaah and also lessons [where] tafseer is [studied] is very low.
Al-Albaani: [Something] very rare [indeed].
Questioner: If not non-existent, what do you think?
Al-Albaani: This is what I have [previously] mentioned in some gatherings.  O brothers, I want to see one of you who has memorised the Quraan. Such that when I, for example, need an aayah and am not able to recall it then I can get help from some of you.
Those who memorise the Quraan are not found except for the very few. And the cause centres entirely around the fact that seeking knowledge today is not done sincerely for the Face of Allaah. This is a calamity.
Questioner: Part of that too are lessons in tafseer, now in Riyadh we have [only] a very limited number of lessons in tafseer.
Al-Albaani: Sorry?
Questioner: I was saying that …
Al-Albaani: Nowadays it is [as though it is] the turn of the study of the science of hadith and that’s it.
Questioner: Yes.
Al-Albaani: And the reason is very clear: it is the lack of sincerity in seeking knowledge for Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic.

Sighing while listening to the Qur’aan or other than it has a number of causes:
One: if while listening to the Qur’aan a person experiences a new degree that he never did before within himself and becomes scared, this happens to him. This is a sign of longing to have this degree.
Two: if a sin is mentioned that he committed, he sighs out of fear and sadness. This is a sigh of fear.
Three: if a fault or weakness is mentioned which he cannot stop or control, it will cause him sadness. His is a sigh of sadness.
Four: when he perceives the perfection of his Lord and discovers that the way to Him is closed. This is a sigh of sadness and grief.
Five: if he forgets His Lord and is busy with other than Him and this recitation reminds him of his Lord and outlines the way to Him clearly and openly, this is a sign of joy and happiness.
Anyway, the cause of sighing is the strength and significance of the event in comparison with the weakness of the person and his ability to bear it or overcome it, along with the power of the event when it happens inside of him. If he shows it on his face, it would cause the effect to be weak and would bring about its end. This is the sigh, which comes from the true servant. The one who tastes that is either truthful, a thief or a hypocrite.

The Qur’aan Comes First

Author: The Grand Mufti Shaikh ‘Abdul ‘Azeez Aalish Shaikh (HafithahuAllah)
Source: www.Sahab.net
Translator: Abu ‘Abdis Salaam Siddiq Al Juyaanee

Q: How can we combine between memorizing the Noble Qur’an and seeking
knowledge?

A: Start with the Qur’an, reading it and perfecting its recitation. If you accomplish
this –may Allah aid you in seeking knowledge- this is a great bounty from Allah upon
you. The Qur’an will be ease for the one who (sincerely) wants it, for verily, Allah
the Most High says,

وََلَقدْ يَسَّرْنَا الُقرْآ َ ن للذِّكِْر َفهَلْ مِنْ مُدَّكٍِر

“And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember,
then is there any that will remember (or receive admonition)?” [Al-Qamar: 17]

The Qur’an is the key to every (Islaamic) science. Your perfection of its recitation
and memorizing it will open up for you areas of knowledge that only Allah knows
(best to what extent will benefit you).
The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said:

"The Best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it"

The Scholar Al-Baani (may Allah have mercy upon him said) in his notes under this hadeeth in silsilah as-Saheeha 1173:

And in this Hadeeth is: a direction into learning The Quran, and that the best knowledge that a person can learn is learning the Quran.

So how wishful it is that the students of knowledge would realize that. Because in it, is great benefit.

And fom the calamities that have hit our era is that you find many of the callers or the beginners amongst  the students  of knowledge going into giving fatwa's (Islamic verdicts) and answering questions of people;  while he hasn't even made good his recitation of Suratul Faatiha from its proper recitation...'

Up to where he said..

'..so advice to myself and then to them is that; the best of what a student of knowledge begins on is memorising The Quran'
