Happiness, Misery and Signs of Their People

Happiness, Misery and Signs of Their People
Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

From the signs of happiness and joy is that whenever a worshipper increases in knowledge, his humbleness and mercy increases. Whenever he increases in acts of worship, his fear and caution increases. Whenever he increases in age, his greed decreases. Whenever he increases in wealth, his generosity and spending increases. And whenever he increases in status and position, his nearness to the people increases as does his fulfilling their needs and being humble with them.

And from the signs of misery is that whenever a worshipper increases in knowledge, his pride and arrogance increases. Whenever he increases in acts of worship, his bragging increases as does his belittling of people while always giving himself the benefit of the doubt. And whenever he increases in status and position, his arrogance and ego increases.

All of these things are trials from Allaah and a test by which He tests His servants, and because of them, some people attain happiness and others become miserable.

Similarly, some things people honor and admire are also trials like possessions, authority, and wealth. Allaah says about His prophet, Sulaymaan, when he saw the throne of Bilqees in front of him:

“This is from the favor of My Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful”
[Soorah An-Naml, 27:40]

So, blessings are tests from Allaah that make apparent the gratitude of the grateful, and the ingratitude of the ungrateful. In the same way, hardhips are also trials from Him ; He tests by way of blessings and hardships.
Allaah says:

“And as for man, when his Lord tests him and is generous to him and favors him, he says, “My Lord has honored me!” But when He tests him and restricts his provision, he says, “My Lord has humiliated me!”
[Soorah Al-Fajr, 89:15-16]

In other words, it’s not the case that everyone I increase with honor and blessings, that’s My way of honoring him. And everyone I tighten his sustenance and test him, it’s not necessarily that I’m humiliating him.

- The shahaadatain is a test for the slave’s heart;

- The salat is a test for the slave’s limbs, and ability to manage himself and his time;

-The zakat is a test for man in his wealth;

-The fasting is a test for the slave’s ability to leave off desires for the sake of His Creator and Lord;

-The Hajj is a test for the slave’s ability to bear hardship, difficulties of traveling in the way of Allaah

Blog Entry From The Foundations of Evils

            Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem

The time is the life of the servant, it was said by a poet:

"and the time is the most precious thing that you can have concern for preserving--and I see that it is the easiest thing which can be wasted"

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy upon him) said:

" The wasting of time is more severe than death. That is because the matter of death cuts you off from the worldly life whereas the wasting of time cuts you off from Allaah"

The time is the capital of your wealth. That is because your life which Allaah has decreed for you, He wants that you attain with it the honor of the Deen and the bliss of the hereafter. Therefore if you waste it, the reality of your worldly life will be wasted as well as your hereafter being plundered. There is no (worldly) loss greater upon the servant than the wasting of his time. The prophet said (what means):

"Take advantage of 5 things before 5 things overcome you: Take advantage of your youth before your old age. Take advantage of your health before your sickness. Take advantage of of you life before your death. Take advantage of your richness before you poverty, and take advantage of your free time before becoming preoccupied."

Narrated by al-Haakim on the authority of Ibn Abbaas. So the question stands, is the wasting of these prize possessions to be considered from the happiness of the Muslim? Therefore with the time the Muslim has the ability to capitalize off of everything that has been mentioned in the hadeeth....

May Allaah benefit you all with that which has been mentioned, Aameen.

How Do We Combine Between The Statements Of Allaah?

How Do We Combine Between The Statements Of Allaah?

for everyone

"Your wealth and your children are only a trial, whereas Allâh! With Him is a great reward (Paradise)." (at-Taghaabun/15).

"Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world. But the good righteous deeds (five compulsory prayers, deeds of Allâh's obedience, good and nice talk, remembrance of Allâh with glorification, praises and thanks, etc.), that last, are better with your Lord for rewards and better in respect of hope" (al-Kahf/46)

The noble Shaykh Yahyaa al-Hajooree (May Allaah preserve him) answered:

" This is beauty also, and there's no doubt that in this there's beauty and there can also be a trial in it for the person (by way of it) busying (ones attention) away from the remembrance of Allaah. This is the greatest trial. Allaah has said:

"O you who believe! Let not your properties or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allâh. And whosoever does that, then they are the loser" (al-Munaafiqoon/9)

It is a tremendous loss that you are diverted away from the remembrance of Allaah, the prayer, the pilgrimage, and the (other) acts of worship because of the child.

The child is one who causes one to be stingy and cowardly. Therefore because of this be aware of this child which Allaah has provided you with in order that the child doesn't become a trial for you, rather the child will be a blessing upon in the (affair) of obedience to Allaah. As for if the child is a trial upon you (and diverts you away from the remembrance of Allaah...) then verily you are a loser just as the Qur'aan has stated.

It's a must that one take the caution regarding this matter. It is possible that when Allaah provides a person with a child, the child busies the person him from the fulfillment of  obligations. When the child busies the person from the fulfillment of  obligations and the person gives precedence to the love of the child over the obedience to Allaah this love becomes an act of disobedience."

The State of Affairs of The Believer in The Life of This World

The State of Affairs of The Believer in The Life of This World

On the authority of Suhaib (may Allaah be pleased with him) he said: The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam said:

"Amazing is the affair of the believer, verily all of his affair is good and this is not for no one except the believer. If something of good/happiness befalls him he is grateful and that is good for him. If something of harm befalls him he is patient and that is good for him" (Saheeh Muslim #2999)

From this we understand that the state of affairs for the believer changes in the life of this world. Shaykhul Islaam ibn Qayyim al-Jawzeeyah (may Allaah have mercy upon him) said regarding the state of affairs for the believer:

"One of them is the state of (receiving a) blessing. It's obligatory upon him (the believer) in this state (to display) the gratitude.

The second: is the state (of being) tested. It is obligatory upon him (the believer) in this state (to observe) the patience.

The third: is the state (of committing) a sin. It is obligatory upon him (the believer) in this state to seek the forgiveness from it (the sin).

The servant does not go outside of the fluctuation between these three states. One of them is either a blessing or a virtue from Allaah of good health, wealth, a child to other than that. It is obligatory upon him that he thanks Allaah for this bounty. Let the servant contemplate over the statement of Allaah:

" ٱعۡمَلُوٓاْ ءَالَ دَاوُ ۥدَ شُكۡرً۬اۚ وَقَلِيلٌ۬ مِّنۡ عِبَادِىَ ٱلشَّكُورُ "

"Work you, O family of Dâwud (David), with thanks!" But few of My slaves are grateful." (surah Sabaa: 13)

So how many of those whom Allaah has favored them:

"وَإِن تَعُدُّواْ نِعۡمَةَ ٱللَّهِ لَا تُحۡصُوهَآ‌ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَغَفُورٌ۬ رَّحِيمٌ۬"

"And if you would count the favours of Allâh, never could you be able to count them. Truly! Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (surah an-Nahl: 18)

How many show thanks to Allaah for these favours? Less than a few!

Or there is a (state of being) tested. It is obligatory upon him in this state (to observe) the patience. Meaning that Allaah from His overwhelming wisdom He could test the believing servant from the different types of test. It's obligatory upon him to (observe) the patience because this is from the belief in the divine decree and from submitting the the decree of Allaah. Also (the servant must know) that what has befalling him was never going to pass him by. All of that is written in the book of Allaah (al-Lawhul-Mahfooth). Verily Allah doesn't test him (the servant) to destroy him. He only test him in order to test his patience and servitude. Verily there is for Allaah upon the servant servitude in times of hardship just as there is for Him (Allaah) upon the servant servitude in times of happiness. There also is for Him (Allaah) upon the servant servitude in that which he (the servant) dislikes just as there is for Him (Allaah) upon the servant servitude in that which he (the servant) loves. Most of the creation give the servitude in that which they love. However the matter is giving the servitude in that which there is his hardship. The other state is (a state of) sin. It is obligatory upon him (the servant) in this state to seek the forgiveness this is clear with regards to the obligation of turning to Allaah (repentance) displaying ones need for him."

This is from the work of Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawzeeyah (may Allaah have mercy upon him) titled "al-Waabil as-Sayyib" Baarakallaah feekum.

Praying Tahajjud with the wife

Praying Tahajjud with the wife

Where should a woman stay when offering the optional late night Prayer behind her husband?

Q 2: Is it permissible for the husband to offer qiyam-ul-Layl (standing for optional Prayer at night) with his wife standing beside him even though he is not leading her in Salah (Prayer)?

A: Offering Tahajjud (optional late night Prayer) in other than Ramadan is not permissible in congregation continuously; rather, each person has to offer it individually. However, it is permissible for your wife to offer Salah beside you as long as you do not lead her in Salah and she does not follow you. Also, there is no harm for her to offer Tahajjud with you in other than Ramadan occasionally but not continuously; because Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) offered optional night Salah with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and so did Abu Al-Darda’ who offered Salah with Salman (may Allah be pleased with them). Your wife should stand behind you when you lead her in Salah.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions!

Best way to start the day off after praying the morning prayer

Best way to start the day off after praying the morning prayer

On the authority of Umm Salamah (may Allaah be pleased with her) she said: "The Prophet (sallallaah alayhi wa sallam)use to say when He would pray the morning prayer after making the tasleem (finishing the prayer with turning to His right saying As-salaamu alaykum wa rah-ma-tullaah then turning to His left and doing the same): "Oh Allaah verily I ask you for beneficial knowledge, a good provision, and accepted action(s)"

(Authenticated by al-Albaanee in Saheeh Ibn Maajah 753)

This narration has many benefits to it as can be seen by the one who contemplates and ponders over it. Also there is in the Prophet's (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) action of saying this in the morning after finishing His morning prayer a suitable time for supplicating with this supplication. That is because dawn is the beginning of the day. The muslim should have no other desire to attain anything in his/her day except for these three matters. As these three matters are all that a muslim is in need of to attain the pleasure of Allaah. From the benefits of this narration

1. The virtue of Umm Salamah being that she has imparted to this ummah (nation) a matter from the sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). As the Prophet said (what means) "The one who guides to good is like the one who has done" So Umm Salamah gets a reward for those who practice that which she narrated on the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam).

2. The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) was one who prayed the morning prayer (as well as all other prayers) at the proper time on a consistent bases, and He informed us that the most beloved action to Allaah is " the prayer at its proper time".

3. There are some du-aa (supplication) that are to be made after the tasleem. Other than that the best time to supplicate is while one is in prayer during sujood (prostration) and after sending the salaah and salaam upon the Prophet in the ta-shah-hud.

4. One is not to raise ones hands when making this du-aa. If that was the case then Umm Salamah would have narrated that as she narrated in another narration that the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) never left her house except that He raised His sight to the heavens saying "Oh Allaah...". She mentioned that He raised His sight so for sure she would have mentioned that He raised His hands had He done so.

5. The importance of knowledge being that the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) began His supplication by asking Allaah for the beneficial knowledge.

6. Not all knowledge is beneficial. As He didn't just ask for knowledge, He asked for beneficial knowledge.

7. One is in need of beneficial knowledge in order to attain a good provision and accepted actions, as knowledge precedes statements and actions.

8. The importance of good provisions being that He asked Allaah for it after beneficial knowledge.

9. Not all provisions are good. As He didn't just ask for provisions, He asked for a good provision.

10. The importance of having ones actions accepted being that He supplicated to Allaah for it.

11. Not all actions are accepted.

12. Taking advantage of the start of ones day to seek Allaah's help in the attaining of these important matters.

13. Not depending on ones ability in attaining that which is beneficial rather turning to Allaah the one who controls all of the affairs to attain that which is beneficial.

14. Another example of al-Jawaa-mi-ul Kalam (ability to speak with few words that have tremendous benefit). As this supplication has few words but it entails many affairs of benefit.

15. In another narration the last statement is "amalan saalihan" instead of "amalan mu-ta-qab-balan" and the meaning is righteous action. Therefore an accepted action is a righteous action and a righteous action is that which is done sincerely for Allaah according to the sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam).

My noble brothers and sisters in Islaam this is a tremendous supplication that we all should have memorized and that we all should make every morning. Do not allow this sunnah to become mah-joorah (abandoned) in our lives. Baarakallaah feekum wa as-salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaah wa barakaatuh.
