Treating a possessed person by reciting Ayahs

Fatwas of the Permanent Committee>Group 1>Volume 1: `Aqidah (1)>Creeds>Ruqyah and amulets>Ruqyah>Treating a possessed person by reciting Ayahs
(Part No. 1Page No. 267)
The first question of Fatwa no. 9645
Q 1: Some of our brothers exorcise Jinn from the possessed by reciting some Ayahs (Qur'anic verses). These brothers claimed that while treating a patient, Jibril (Gabriel, peace be upon him) descended from heaven and assisted them in exorcising the Jinn. This account has resulted in dissension and conflict among the people. Please elaborate on this matter. Does Jibril descend from heaven after the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to help anyone as they claimed, or for any other reason?
A: It is permissible to treat a patient possessed by Jinn by reciting Ayahs or Surahs over them, because Ruqyah (recitation for healing or protection) with the Qur'an is prescribed by Shari‘ah (Islamic law). As to the descent of Jibril for this, it has absolutely no basis in Shari`ah, as far as we know.
May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
