Our Da'wah
Saturday, 29 November 2003
By Imaam Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaanee
Imaam Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaanee [d. 1420] delivers a short yet concise overview of ‘our da’wah’ as in the da’wah of ahlus-sunnah wal-jamaa’ah, ad-da’watul-anbiyaa. Shaykh al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah) explains the three levels of Islaamic knowledge with many clear-cut evidences that will leave the listener no choice but to understand that ‘true Islaam’ is the Qur’aan and Sunnah upon the understanding of the salaf. The noble muhaddith continues with an explanation of knowledge in the sharee’ah as opposed to linguistic knowledge, the vast contrast between the two and the harm of making rulings without sharee’ah knowledge.

Review:

The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, "Near the establishment of the Hour, there will be the days of al-Harj, and the religious knowledge will be taken away (vanish i.e. by the death of Religious scholars) and general ignorance will spread." Aboo Moosaa said, "al-Harj, in the Ethiopian language, means killing," Ibn Mas'ood added: I heard Allaah's Apostle saying; (It will be) from among the most wicked people who will be living at the time when the Hour will be established." [1]

Explains the muhaddith of his time, Imaam Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah), “This does not mean that at one time we will not find any scholars on the earth, rather, what it points to, as time passes the less scholars we will have, till we will not find on the earth people who say ‘Allaah, Allaah’. The hadeeth says ‘ignorant people’; from the ignorant people are those who give the tafseer of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah with no tafseer (preceding them).

States Imaam al-Albaanee, “Knowledge is at three levels:

Allaah said (the Qur’aan)
The ahaadeeth of the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).
The statements of the Companions (radiyallaahu ‘anhum)

As many people say, when they speak about this topic, ‘Islaam is taken from the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)’, and with this there is no doubt, but then, it is incomplete. As we see Ibnul-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) did not stop at ‘The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said’ rather he said ‘The Companions (radiyallaahu ‘anhum) said’ and we hardly hear this from the preachers who call to Islaam today. This is taken from the hadeeth of the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam),

“The best of people is my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them."[2]

Concerning the third level of taking knowledge, the statements of the Companions (radiyallaahu ‘anhum), “It is based upon an ayaah in the Qur’aan,

“And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger (Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, and follows other than the believers’ way. We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell – what an evil destination. [Sooratun-Nisaa, 4:115]

…And you should notice that Allaah included, ‘…and follows other than the believers’ and this is not done without a great wisdom. So let not this ayaah be dismissed, remember this ayaah continuously so that you do not deviate right or left, this will be a safeguard for you from the evil sects which are not going to be successful as in the hadeeth that I will mention in short,

He (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “Indeed, the people of the Book before you split-up into seventy-two sects. And this nation will split-up into seventy-three sects, seventy two are in the Fire and one is in Paradise." [3] And in another narration, “All of them are in the Fire except one.” It was asked, ‘Who is that one?’ He replied, “That which I and my Companions are upon.”

In this ayaah, Allaah promises the person who deviates from the path of the believers, the hellfire. And the one who follows the path of the believers the paradise. So Ibnul-Qayyim mentioned in his poetry ‘The Companions (radiyallaahu ‘anhum) said’, which he included amongst the sources of knowledge. He did not speak of his own whims, his own opinion, his own itjihaad (derivation), rather took it from the previous ayaah and hadeeth. Also, there is another hadeeth that points to this,

The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, …Those of you who live long after me will see a lot of differences, so hold fast to my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs after me. Cling to it tightly and beware of newly-invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance, and all misguidance is in the Fire." [4]

The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) did not only say ‘stick to my sunnah’ but rather ‘…hold fast to my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs after me’ who are actually the Companions. Today the youth are confused and find it hard to join a group, they ask ‘to which group should I join?’ but it should said to them, ‘Follow the path of the believers’ (in reference to the previous ayaah, Sooratun-Nisaa, 4:115).”

So, Shaykh Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaanee advises the youth, “Follow the path of the believers, this is not the path of today but the ‘manhaj as-salafus-saalih’ (the methodology of the pious predecessors), those who are our examples. So we should know in short that our da’wah stands upon three pillars, 1) the Book of Allaah, 2) The Sunnah of the Messenger (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam), 3) The way of the salafus-saalih. So for the one who claims that he follows the Qur’aan and the Sunnah but does not follow the way of the salafus-saalih then he in fact is not following the Qur’aan and the Sunnah. So if he is not following the path of the believers, he will either be following his whims or his intellect and both will send him into a great and far misguidance. And I believe that the difference between the sects of the past was one factor, they did not return to the way of the salafus-saalih. So all the sects say we follow the Qur’aan and the Sunnah but the actual line which divides us is that we follow the Book and the Sunnah upon the methodology of the salafus-saalih.”

Review:

Quotes from the lecture:

"…And the deen is complete, we do not need new, additional notes from you or me, groups or parties… Let us stay upon this salafee manhaj, it is the aided group, the Firqatun-Naajiyah (the saved sect), the Taa`ifatul-Mansoorah (the victorious group), it is Ahlul-Hadeeth (the people of Hadeeth). That which Ibn Taymiyyah and the likes where upon and it is what we are upon.”

“If it wasn’t for the obstacles that come in its way from the people of kufr and bid’ah, we would see this blessed da’wah shining across the Muslim world.”

“Beware of division, whether it be fanatical bigotry or partisanship. For many of the youth do not hesitate to lie, hold fast to the rope of Allaah, this blessed Islaamic Salafee Da’wah.”

“It is upon us to hold fast to the rope of Allaah and to stay far from separation… I ask Allaah to show us the truth in its reality and to show us falsehood and its realities… I ask Allaah to make us callers to the truth and may Allaah save us from the punishment of the evildoers.”

Stated Imaam Ibn Baaz (rahimahullaah), “The callers need to spread knowledge through any means, radio, books, lectures because the people are in need of knowledge and what our brother, Shaykh Rabee’ has mentioned is correct, the da’wah of Shaykh Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab.. The da’wah of Shaykh Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhab is the Salafee da’wah, what the sahaabah were upon, the da’wah of Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibnul-Qayyim and others. He called the people to pure tawheed, from his magnificent books is Kitaabut-Tawheed and he propagated the books of Ibn Taymiyyah, he called to this da’wah and aided Islaam, uniting this peninsula upon correctness, uprightness and istiqaamah.”

The Sunnah & it's Safeguard against the Fire
Tuesday, 12 June 2007
By Shaykh Yahyaa Ibn 'Alee al-Haajuree
Listen to the warning against leaving off the clear white path which the Messenger of Allaah left us upon, namely his Sunnah. It is this one and only path which takes one to Paradise and it is deviation from this path which leads to the Fire.

Review:

This is the translation of a set of tapes from the famous Silsilatul-Hudaa wa Noor series by Imaam al-Albaanee. He gives an extremely beneficial lecture establishing the foundational principles of Salafiyyah. The conclusion of the talk of Shaykh Naasir explains the foundations of Salafiyyah. Here, there is the addition of some doubts which the Shaykh answers in a very astute way.

Review:

Due to the weakness in the Ummah and lack of comprehension of the pure Islamic methodology, it is common in our time that an ignorant person is taken as a person of knowledge, and that an ignorant person assumes the role and responsibility of a speaker and caller to Islaam. Despite the mountain of statements from the Salaf, the likes of al-Laalikaaee, al-Barabahaaree, Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Ibn Sireen and so on imploring the Muslims to stick to the Scholars, the people of sunnah (the jama'aah) and to stay away from doubtful matters.

So before seeking to sit in a gathering, have you asked yourself:
- Is this person known to the scholars or their students?
- Does he have tazkiyaat of any sort?
- Who are his companions (from whom does he sit with)?
- Does he frequent the gatherings of Ahlus-Sunnah, their masaajid, seminars, lectures etc.?
- What do the people of Sunnah and Salafiyyah in his area say about him?
- Does he cooperate with Ahlul-Bid'ah, their masaajid and programmes (is he here, there and everywhere)?

Do you put up these roadblocks in your mind before setting out to seek knowledge with a man? Seeing that it is from the most important affairs you could ever set out upon...your salvation, your 'aqeedah, your path towards paradise insha'Allaah

Shaykh Ahmad Bazmool states:

'...This is how important this is, this knowledge is deen, something that he will be raised with on the day of judgment...the Muslim must look and take his deen from Ahlus-Sunnah, as-Salafiyyoon, known for knowledge, being upright and having taqwaa'

'Imaam Maalik said it is not enough for someone to be a worshipper, and to be known for Zuhd, outward expression of worship, that you take from them...but they did not take from them because that was not their affair (knowledge), they were worshippers that's all. In this time we see someone who has a lihyah (beard), his thobe above his ankles and he is then the muftee of his area, this is a mistake!'

'It is forbidden for the one who is asked and doesn't know, to answer. Likewise it is haraam for the one to ask one who doesn't know...he has to ask the scholar...if you had a medical situation, would we go to a mechanic? And if we had a problem with our car, would we go to a farmer...no we would go to each individual who is a specialist in their field...so when it comes to the issue of deen, we must go to the scholars, it is not right to ask (just) anybody or do what everyone else is doing.'

''Abudh-Dardaa' went to the masjid one day (in the time of the tabi’een) and he observed the people praying differently than according to the Sunnah, so he came home angry and his wife (Ummudh-Dardaa') asked him what has made you angry? He said, 'By Allaah I don't see anything from the time of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) except praying together (meaning that they had abandoned much of the Sunnah). This is his statement whilst he was close to the time of the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). So what about know? 1400 years after that, are general masses upon Sunnah? Are the general masses upon knowledge? No! Rather we should follow the scholars!'

From the other points discussed:

An Important point is made about leaving off taking knowledge even from the one who speaks with the 'Aqeedah of Ahlus-Sunnah yet he has hizbiyyah with him or Surooriyyah with him (i.e. someone simply speaking with the haqq doesn't make him a person of knowledge or a person to sit with)
The corrupt principle of 'taking the good/leaving the bad', making oneself a private investigator into the affairs of many people of many different beliefs and then appointing oneself as the criterion between what to take and what to leave (not realising that he, himself, is ignorant, he can't protect himself from this fitnah and this isn't from the manhaj of Ahlus-Sunnah to sit with Ahlul-Bid'ah in this regard)

The questions from the community in the USA:

[Q1]: If a person lives in a country that doesn't have a scholar, and he finds someone who has mistakes but may know some fiqh, what can you do?

[Q2]: Concerning the doubts cast upon Imaam al-Bukhaaree (in which some claimed he made a mistake in an issue) and refering to this when discussing the criticism of the scholar, Shaykh Rabee' Ibn Haadee upon Abul-Hasan al-Ma'ribee

[Q3]: Concerning the status of Muhammad Rizq at-Tarhoonee

[Q4]: Calling to Allaah without knowledge, is it correct for me to call people at my workplace to Islaam citing Ayaat and Hadeeth?

[Q5]: Regarding those women whose husbands leave them for extended periods and don't attend to them or spend on them, then when they seek a divorce from him, he refuses

[Q6]: Will the Angels enter a room that is clear of pictures when the rest of the house isn't?

[Q7]: What should the Muslim stance be on the issue of 'Iraaq and Saddam Hussein?

[Q8]: What is the ruling on boxing, what is the verdict upon watching this since it involves striking the face?

[Q9]: How should we cooperate with QSS seeing that they have a conference with some of the students from Jordan and Usaamah al-Qoosee and Abu Usamah?

[Q10]: Should we still allow the officials of QSS (and another website), and Abu Usamah to be advisers to us, participating with us?

[Q11]: Can a masjid be opened from one's home, where the five salawaat are offered and jumu'ah prayed, in order to stay away from the masaajid of ahlul-bid'ah

[Q12]: If a man has a daughter married out of zinaa, then they all accept Islaam, can he continue his father/daughter relationship with her?

[Q13]: Can a man give a gift specifically to a woman who is foreign to him (i.e. a married woman)?

[Q14]: If I am in a lecture, and the speaker send salaams on the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), do I have to also?

[Q15]: Who should advise these organisations (or individuals) who have fallen in to hizbiyyah, the common Muslim or the Scholars?

[Q16]: How do we understand the statement of Ibn Taymiyyah, 'it is not for a person to call to a person or his speech or to make loyalites upon this, nor is it permissible to take enemies based upon an individuals speech', how do weigh this against the statement of the Salaf, 'if anyone speaks against Imaam Ahmad then know that he is a person of desires' and like the scholars say today 'if someone speaks against Shaykh Rabee', he is a person of his desires'
