A Journey Of The Believers Upon Taqwaa (piety), Obedience to Allaah (عَزَّ و جَلَّ) and Righteous Actions…
Ash-Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله تعالى) said,
"Al-Eemaan is: Qawlu bi Lisaani (statement of the tongue), wa Tasdeequ bil-Janaani(belief and affirmation of the heart), wa 'Amalul-Jawaarih wal-Arkaani (Action of the limbs and body parts), wa yazeedu bi Taa'atir-Rahmaani (it increases with obedience to the Most Merciful) wa yanqisu bi Taa'atish-Shaytaani (and decreases upon obedience to Satan).”
Al-Imaam Abee Muhammad al-‘Andaloosee al-Qahtaanee (رحمه الله تعالى) also said in his famous Nooniyyah poetry:
إيماننا بالله بين ثلاثة عمل وقولوا عتقاد جنان
ويزيد بالتقوى وينقص بالردى وكلاهما في القلب يعتلجان
"Our Eemaan in Allaah is between three (things),Qawlin (statement), 'Amalin(actions) and 'Itiqaadi Janaani (the belief of the heart), it increases with Taqwaa (piety) and it decreases with evil sins and wickedness. And both of these two matters occur within the heart ya’tiljaani (i.e. ‘italaja- to fumble, meaning: yatasaari’aan(fighting and wrestling) yatadaafi’aan(pushing and expelling) or as a constant struggle by forceful impulses and conflict within the heart)."
It has been reported that Al-Khaleefur-Raashid 'Alee bin Abee Taalib (رضي الله تعالى عنه) said,
"At-Taqwaa is khawf (fear) of Al-Jaleel(The Noble Allaah - عَزَّ و جَلَّ), the implementation of the Tanzeel (the Revelation, Qur'aan and Sunnah) and being content with qaleel (having little) and the preparation for the Day of ar-Raheel(travel- meaning Death)."
And Imaam an-Nawawee (رحمه الله تعالى)mentioned this poetry in his introduction of his Riyaadhus-Saaliheen:
إن لله عبادا فطنا *** طلقوا الدنيا وخافوا الفتنا
نظروا فيها ولما عرفوا *** أنها ليست لحي وطنا
جعلوها لجة فاتخذوا *** صالح الأعمال فيها سفنا
"Verily Allaah has some clever slaves…
They divorced the worldly-life and feared the fitnah (evil tribulations)…
They analyzed in it (this life) and came to the conclusion that it was not for a living person to dwell…
So they made this life an abyss (deep Ocean) and took their righteous deeds…
And made them as a ship to travel through it."
